The author analyzes the origins of the formation of the biographical method as an instrument of scientific research of the person, a source of biographical material. When using autobiography as a historical and pedagogical source, the researcher should obtain a broad erudition and possess the appropriate level of source culture, understand the content features of different genres of memoiristics and be acquainted with the methods and techniques of their critical and constructive analysis. Autobiography can be considered as an independent work in which an author investigates their own development. A representative sample of creative autobiographies of the individuals which are being studied as pedagogical personalities suggests that their main array as the original sources of pedagogical biography was formed in the second half of the XIX and 30s’ of XX century of the twentieth century, as in the next decades mainly dry official biographies were written. The content and direction of autobiographies are determined by the purpose and time of writing, since the creation of one author, appearing on different segments of life path, may have an excellent informational and content load.
