Abstract

In practice it is generally assumed that the durability of the basic components should not be less than the expected durability of the building. Reinforced concrete structures, designed and constructed with regard to quality requirements, are durable. However, every reinforced concrete structure, from the moment of its execution, is gradually degraded, and one of the reasons for its destruction is often the corrosion of reinforcement. The aim of this article is to discuss the effect of carbonation of concrete cover on the durability of the structure and the presentation of carbonation mechanisms. The scope of work covers the course of carbonation of reinforced concrete reinforcement and research on the methodology for evaluating the progress of carbonation in concrete. For the long-term use of reinforced concrete structures, the most important thing is that a thin protective film forms on the surface of the steel as a result of the reaction between the alkali cement and the steel, which protects the reinforcing steel from rust. One of the most common causes of corrosion of reinforcement is the damage to this film as a result of carbonation of the cover. The rate of carbonation depends on many factors such as concrete density, CO₂ duration, concrete moisture content, free content, ie lime-responsive cementite, etc. When the carbonate layer reaches the steel reinforcement surface, the corrosion protection of the steel ceases to exist. The rusting process starts when there is enough water and oxygen.
