Banking Sector Competitiveness vs. the Issue of Repolonization – Opportunities and Threats

Abstract
The recent financial crisis, ignited by irregularities in the banking sector, has forced regulators and supervisory authorities worldwide to implement a number of stringent standards and recommendations aimed at curbing the financial market. In recent years, too, Poland has initiated consolidation measures that are increasingly often referred to as “repolonization”. The process is supposed to bring down foreign capital holdings in the banking sector through mergers and acquisitions involving the use of domestic capital. What the process essentially aims at is increased financial security, enhanced efficiency, greater commitment to supporting the country’s economic growth, and putting a halt to transferring profits outside of the country. The paper attempts to analyze the costs and benefits of repolonization in the banking sector. In the years to come, further bank mergers and acquisitions are to be anticipated. For the time being, it is difficult to predict how the changes will affect the banking industry and what the sector will be like in the next two-three years following the changes. However, it is worth a while to look at the likely opportunities and threats inherent in the repolonization process and its consequences.
