Behavioral bases for identification of the sexual pheromone of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Cundinamarca, Colombia
Journal Title: REVISTA CHILENA DE ENTOMOLOGÍA - Year 2022, Vol 48, Issue 3
Abstract
Abstract. The genus Diatraea Guilding can be considered the most economically important in the Colombian sugarcane production systems. Due the unaware of sexual behavior, the wide distribution of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1974) and the geographical variation of sexual pheromone composition, the objective of this work was to understand sexual behavior of this species, evaluating the mating behavior of one- and two-days old virgin adults under laboratory conditions. Additionally, it was constructed an ethogram to understand the sexual behavior of one-day-old virgin adults. Studies were carried out under photoperiod 12h:12h and controlled temperature and relative humidity (25 ± 2 °C, and 60 ± 10% R.H.). The onset copulation was observed from the sixth scotophase hour that was maintained until the tenth hours. Its duration was between 30 and 120 minutes. The couples observed copulated only once and copulated females did not expose their gland again. It was observed that the main behavior that indicates the initiation of the copulation process is the call of female, after which activation, flight, approach, contact and copulation occur with a probability 1.0.
