Benign prostate hypertrophy and its treatment
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
Benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH), as the name suggests, it’s a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The enlargement compresses the urethra which passes through the center of the prostate gland. It obstructs the flow of urine from the urinary bladder. BPH is commonly found in elderly male patients. Symptoms include trouble in urination and in some advanced conditions complete stoppage of urination also occurs. The choice of treatment includes usage of medication like alpha blockers like alfuzocin, tamul;osin, tetrazocin and doxazocin. The mechanism of action of these alpha blockers is by relaxing the smooth muscle of the prostate gland and thereby improving the urine flow. Finasteride and dutasteride, 5- alpha reductase inhibitors, can be drugs of choice through oral route. The medication reduce the risk of acute urinary retention. Finally surgery is the choice for permanent cure for the disease.
