BIOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLF TREES IN PINE SAPLINGS IN THE NOWOGARD FOREST DISTRICT

Journal Title: Zarządzanie ochroną przyrody w lasach - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

Analyses were conducted in the Nowogard Forest Division. Experimental sites were established in two sapling stands of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), a 10-year and a 13-year old. The proportion of wolf trees was found to be slight, on average from approx. 192 to approx. 356 specimens/ha. The paper presents analyses of measurements of height (h) and diameter at breast height (d1.3) of all trees (D-w) and they were compared with those of wolf trees (D-r). It was found that wolf trees (D-r) dominate in terms of their dimensions, irrespective of their age. On average this group of trees (D-r) is taller (h) by approx. 30% in the 10-year old sapling stand and by 20% in the 13-year old sapling stand than the average height (h) of the whole stand (D-w). Wolf trees (D-r) are also thicker (d1.3) by over 4 cm in comparison to the average calculated for the whole stand (D-w). Trees may be classified as wolf trees (D-r) based on their dominance in terms of diameter and height.
