Biopesticide Potential of Cannabis sativa and Datura alba against the major pest of stored grain Tribolium castaneum (Flour beetles)

Abstract
Long-term use of synthetic pesticides has compromised biological defenses against natural enemies, synthetic pesticides have widespread resistance development, adverse impacts on unintended species, environmental problems, and health risks. Plants, a rich source of bioactive compounds, could offer alternatives to currently using synthetic pesticides. They could stimulate the development of new classes of safer pest control agents because they are often effective against a small number of species, including specific target insects, are often recyclable into non-toxic compounds, and lend themselves well to use in integrated pest management. This study was performed to evaluate the biopesticide potential of Cannabis sativa and Datura alba with methanolic and n-hexane fractions against Tribolium castaneum (flour beetles). In this study, both plant fractions were practically non-toxic to the tested insects for up to 12 hours, but the methanolic fraction of Cannabis Sativa and Datura alba showed better activity with 80% and 66% mortality rate at a dose of 50 mg/ml in 48 hours, while the n-hexane fraction showed a mortality rate of 53% and 46% at 48 hours. The results provided good support for the use of Cannabis sativa and Datura alba leaves of both plants as a traditional biopesticides that are more environmentally friendly, however furthermore experimental work is needed to explore its potential against other pest’s species.
