BOGDAN KHMELNITSKY’S IDENTITY AND THE COSSACKS IN B. BARANOVSKY AND S.LIBISHEVSKAYA’SASSESSMENTS

Abstract
The Polish and Ukrainian historiography deals with a problem, which is the general for both peoples so far. One of the most discussed subjects is liberating war under leadership of Bogdan Khmelnytsky. Except confrontation in opin-ions according the reason, the course and the consequence of war, the features of the Ukrainian hetman continue to cause discussions. The assessment of the Polish historians is different during different historical periods. In this context the article of B.Baranovsky and S.Libishevskaya, which has been published to the 300th anniversary of the Pereyaslav-sky contract. In this article the authors have carried out the retrospective review of the problem since the end of the XVI – to the middle of the XX centuries. The authors worked in conditions when the Polish historiography fell under the influence of the Soviet ideology and that could not help reflecting in their certain estimates of the works of the Polish historians. Our attention was drawn by the article of B.Baranovsky and S.Libishevskaya «Problems of national liberation war of the Ukrainian people in the XVII th century» published in 1954 in «The Historical Almanac». In the first lines of the work they draw the attention of the readers by the fact that rare problem has been considered so tendentiously by the Polish bourgeois historiography as liberating war of the Ukrainian people. At any cost the reseachers tried to justify shlyahta-magnate expansion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to the East. The liberating fight of the Ukrainian people was generally treated as «wild lawlessness» and manifestation of «the tendency of anarchy». The authors have also specified that they do not set a task to show the whole bibliography of the problem and also respectively the full assessment of the works of the Polish reseachers according to liberating war of the Ukrainian people.
