BONE MINERALISATION AND DENSITY IN THE POST-MENOPAUSAL EX-ATHLETES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to assess the bone mineralisation and density of female post-menopausal ex-athletes and untrained controls.Material and methods. Post-menopausal female ex-athletes (17 swimmers, 8 kayakers and 7 fencers) and 19 untrained control subjects, aged 50-62 years participated in the study. Bone mineralisation (BMC) and density (BMD) were determined in the lumbar spine (L2-L4) by the DEXA method. Bone stiffness was determined in the calcaneal bone by ultrasound technique. Data concerning sport career and past ovarian function were collected from questionnaires. The present mode of nutrition was assessed from three 24-h dietary recalls and software based on nutrition tables.Results. Ex-fencers reported to have earliest and longest sport career compared with other groups studied, ex-kayakers used to have the highest training volumes, and ex-fencers and ex-swimmers were presently spending more time on leisure physical activities compared with ex-kayakers and untrained subjects. No woman reported amenorrhoea lasting longer than 3 months. At present, only ex-fencers reported a sufficient calcium uptake. No significant between-group differences were found for bone indices studied, but mean values of those indices tended to be higher in ex-athletes than in untrained women. Bone mineral density was below the normal limit in ex-athletes and control subjects alike (21-22% of cases).Conclusions. A long-lasting sport career and the accompanying high training loads, other osteoporosis risk factors (hormonal disorders) being absent, did not affect the present bone mineralisation and density of female ex-athletes.
