BOOK GRAPHICS IN THE CREATIVE WORK OF HENRI MATISSE (1869-1954)

Journal Title: Молодий вчений - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 60

Abstract

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) in our view is primarily a painter. A. Matisse's graphics are less well known, however, they are an outstanding phenomenon in the artistic life of modern Western European art. The graphic heritage of A. Matisse is rare for the painter variety-pen drawings, pencil, charcoal, brush, etchings, lithographs, engravings on linoleum, monotypes, book design and decoupage (clippings from colored paper). To work on the design of books A. Matisse turned relatively late, namely in the 1930-ies. This fact may seem strange if we keep in mind that at the beginning of the XX century, many artists, painters, sculptors and architects have already worked on the design of books. However, the creative development of A. Matisse is surprisingly consistent and internally justified. The appeal to the book in the 1930-ies is inextricably linked with the beginning of the heyday of the artist's graphic art. A. Matisse himself compares the design of the book with the writing of paintings and thus, as if connects it with his original pictorial work.
