Carbon monoxide intoxication

Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the most common causes of inhalation poisoning worldwide. CO is an odorless, colorless gas that usually remains undetectable until exposure results in injury or death. Severe CO poisoning can cause multiorgan dysfunction, frequently necessitating admission to intensive care units. The manifestation of carbon monoxide poisoning are non specific and severity of symptoms range from mild such as headache, confusion, lack of energy to severe, such as coma, respiratory depression, cardiac dysfunction and even death. This article describes the influence of carbon monoxide influence on the human body functions. It also characterizes the signs and symptoms of poisoning according to the carboxyhemoglobin levels. Moreover, it presents the options of treatment and long term follow-up procedures for the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.
