Caries intensity in 12-year-old children as related to hygienic and dietary habits

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. Four factors are responsible for the development of the carious process: bacteria, carbohydrates, susceptibility of tissues to caries, and time in which they coexist. The health care system and its availability, as well as socio-economic and environmental conditions, are significant factors modifying the carious process; however, lifestyle i.e. hygienic and dietary habits exert the most important effects. Aim of the study. To evaluate hygienic and dietary habits of 12-year-old children living in the province of Lodz and their effect on intensity of tooth caries. Material and methods. Four hundred and eighty-one children aged 12 years and living in the province of Lodz were selected for the study. The dental examination was carried out at the school doctor’s surgery in artificial light, using standard diagnostic tools. The results of clinical examination were recorded in specially prepared epidemiological charts. In order to evaluate hygienic and dietary habits, children filled in a questionnaire supervised by the author of the study. The prevalence of dental caries, the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index and its components were calculated. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney and chi-square tests. Results. More than 50% of children (58.2%) brush their teeth 2-3 times a day. The mean DMFT score in children brushing their teeth 2-3 times a day was 2.28. Higher intensity and prevalence of caries were observed in the group of children not using additional hygiene agents for the oral cavity (DMFT score=2.37, prevalence=76.7) as compared with children using these agents (DMFT=1.92, prevalence=68.6%). Higher intensity of caries was found in the group of children eating sweets a few times a day (DMFT=2.38) as compared with children consuming sweets less frequently (DMFT=2.06). Conclusions. 1. The use of additional oral hygiene agents, i.e. mouthrinses and dental floss, statistically significantly reduces caries intensity in 12-year-old children. 2. Excessive consumption of sugar affects an increase in caries intensity among 12-year-old children. 3. There is a need for further education of patients on proper hygienic and dietary habits, which might increase their awareness and improve their health. 4. The study revealed higher sugar consumption and better hygienic habits among girls.
