CATEGORIES OF SENSE AND MEANING IN PSYCHOLOGICAL DISCOURSE

Journal Title: ІНОЗЕМНА ФІЛОЛОГІЯ - Year 2018, Vol 131, Issue

Abstract

The article deals with the fundamental logical-semantic categories of meaning and sense. The main subject to handle is the complexity of meaning and sense of psychological terms used in psychological discourse. Proceeding from the idea that speech generation is governed by abstract mechanisms through which the deep structure of the lingual units correlates with the surface structure, the author makes an attempt to consider and explain the processes of sense generation in psychological texts. This process is interpreted taking into account the general orientation of semantic processes from the pole of the subject of activity to the pole of its object through the realization of semantic structures and their relations. The semantic contaminations and attractions of psychological lexis in the processes of sense generation are revealed. The phenomenon of metaphorics as a universal mechanism of sense generation in psychological discourse is considered and the main functions of metaphors are explored. The concepts of mental and semantic spaces are scrutinized and their role in the process of sense generation is clarified.
