CATIONIC POLYMERS AS EFFECTIVE WATER-BASED LUBRICANT ADDITIVES
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 239, Issue 5
Abstract
Studies on water as a lubricant base are being carried out primarily because of ecological considerations. Attempts are being made to improve its unfavourable tribological and physicochemical properties (e.g. corrosive action) by incorporating additives. In this paper, surface-active cationic polymers have been suggested as solution components. The polymers are Polyquaternium-7 (PQ7, a copolymer of diallyldimethylammonium chloride and acrylamide) and Polyquaternium-47 (PQ47, a terpolymer of acrylic acid, methacrylamidopropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and methyl acrylate). This subject of study is consistent with current tendencies found in the literature on the subject. The application of cationic polymers to the lubrication of movable elements of living organisms has even been suggested. Physicochemical properties (surface tension, viscosity) and tribological properties (friction coefficient, wear scar diameter) were measured as a function of concentration (1-5%) and load (10, 30 and 50 N). The measurements were carried out using a T-11 tribometer produced at the Institute for Sustainable Technologies – National Research Institute in Radom. It was found that the two cationic polymers were highly effective in reducing motion resistance and wear. A threefold decrease in the coefficient of friction and a 2.5-fold reduction in wear scar diameter were found. The effects of the kind of compound and its concentration as well as the applied loads on the quantities measured are discussed.
