Causes of Domestic Violence Against Women

Abstract
Introduction: Domestic violence against women is an important public health problem that is common in all societies and occurs as a reflection of gender inequality on relationships. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the causes of domestic violence and the reactions to violence in women aged 15-49 in Mardin province. Materials and Methods: Women between the ages of 15-49 living in Mardin city center and its districts constituted the population of the research, 1111 people were selected for the sample by being represented in proportion to their population. The responsiveness rate is 95.8%. Results: The mean age of the women was 32.5±8.2, and among the reasons for the violence they were exposed to were 59.6%, “spontaneous anger of their spouse”, financial problems with 57.1%, family problems with 46.6%, and jealousy with 39.6%. It was stated that 63.5% of the women responded to the violence they were exposed to as crying/not speaking/offending; 48.2% did not react at all, on the contrary, they were withdrawn; It was determined that 32.2% of them verbally responded to the violence they were exposed to. 57.3% of women do not want their children to be fatherless; 40.0% of them stated that they continue to be married because they have no income. Conclusion: Momentary anger of the spouse, financial/family problems, jealousy are among the most important causes of violence against women. Despite this, women, their children are not left without a father, they have no income, etc. continues to endure violence for many reasons.
