Change in Nasolabial Angle During the Neuromuscular Correction of Excessive Gingival Display from Botulinum Toxin Type A

Abstract

Abstract: Nasolabial angle is an important parameter in clinical examination and cephalometric soft tissue analysis. Normal value of Nasolabial angle is 95-1100. Acute nasolabial angle suggests proclined teeth,short upper lip, anterior vertical maxillary excess. The purpose of that study was to determine the change in nasolabial angle by injecting BTX-A at particular muscle sites during botox therapy for gummy smiles caused by hyper contractibility or excessive muscle activity. Ten subjects from both the sexes with age group of16-27 years, with gummy smile more than 5mm of gingival exposure on smiling, due to hyperactivity of elevator muscles. Botulinium toxin type-A doseage of 1.25 U per muscle site per side was selected as a baseline at the start of the study. Under sterile conditions, 1.25 U per side was injected in both the right and left levator labii superioris and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscles (LLS), and an additional 1.25 U per side at the overlap areas of the levator labii superioris and zygomaticus. The effect of botox on nasolabial angle and gingival display was measured at the interval of 2weeks, 4 weeks, 8weeks, 16 weeks, and 24 weeks. The following conclusions were drawn from the present study botox-A injection was effective in reducing nasolabial fold on administration of 2.5 units on either side from 4th to 24th week.
