Changeability of tree tissue properties of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) as a marker of trees’ ageing

Abstract

Changeability of tree tissue properties of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) as a marker of trees’ ageing. This paper attempts to delineate the effects of the ageing process of trees on the quality of the tree’s tissue circumscribed by its properties, i.e. basic density (Qu) as well as the static bending strength of absolutely dry wood and of maximally saturated wood (Rgdry, Rgwet). Four tree stands, aged between 157 and 175 years, were selected for the research. From among them, a total of 12 trees were selected for the analysis of wood properties. The obtained results proved that the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) growing in conditions which are typical for a given region achieves technical maturity after reaching cutting age, which equals approximately 100 years. A distinct decrease of the researched parameters, after the cutting age is reached by a tree, points to a dynamically progressing ageing process. It is shown by a steady decline in the properties of the tree tissue. One can at the same time surmise that ageing of trees has its effects on the chemical composition of wood which is proved by the difference in desorption strengthening of the compared age ranges.
