CHANGES IN THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF IRON BASED ALLOYS DURING TRIBOLOGICAL CONTACT WITH STEEL HEATED TO THE AUSTENITE RANGE

Abstract
Hot forming of steel (including forging) is most often performed in the austenite region. Because of that, tribological properties of tools used in hot processing should be related to the conditions of their contact with steel heated up into the austenite region. This work is focused on the phenomena occurring on the surface of tool materials during tribological contact. The influence of the microstructure of iron based tools on: white layer formation, white layer and sticking presence on the tools surface, thermal and fatigue cracks, tool material formability, spalling of tool materials (including spalling of carbides) as well as the changes in the microstructure of the white layer induced by the temperature gradients.<br/><br/>
