CHANGES OF SOMATIC DEVELOPMENT AND PHYSICAL FITNESS OF MEN ATTENDING COMMISSIONING COURSE WITH RESPECT TO THEIR MARITAL STATUS

Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2009, Vol 154, Issue 4

Abstract

The paper mainly aims to assess the somatic build and physical fitness of men with respect to their marital status. The research material was collected in the course of two examina-tions of men attending a 12-month commissioning course at the Gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław from 2006 to 2009. The examinations included anthropometric measurements, motor trials and a survey. Body height and body mass were measured. Moreover, the body mass index and the Rohrer index were calculated. The following functional characteristics were measured: run endurance, relative strength, trunk muscles strength, explosive strength of lower limbs and speed-running agility. In addition, since the values of body weight and the results of the long jump from the standing position were known, maximum anaerobic work was calculated. The data on marital status of the men under research were obtained in a survey. Significant differences occurred only in the older group with respect to the body mass index and the Rohrer index between unmarried men and married men. The advantageous values of these indexes were characteristic of married men. Marital status did not influ-ence the level of physical fitness of men throughout the research. Significant changes ap-peared only between younger unmarried men and married men in the level of maximum anaerobic work during the first examination and in the level of trunk muscles strength during the second examination.
