CHANGING SECURITY THEORIES AND AN ANALYSIS OF TURKEY’S SECURITY POLITICS BETWEEN 1990-2005

Abstract

Post Cold War era has brought new definitions and conflicts to Security agenda both in World and in Turkey. Globalization and its impact on broadening framework of the security studies by the determination of the state are the most remarkable one that must be mentioned. Non-proliferation agreements, ethnic and religious conflicts, distribution of WMD’s, immigration and ecological degradation are some of the reasons that the international institutions has re-founded themselves in the aspect of security. This process also provoked the theoretical debate in the area. Change in the state centred analyse of security, evolution from defence policies to developmental policies, has sheltered critical security studies to grow up in global politics. As a result, from 1990 to 2005 Turkish domestic security policies could be considered as a major case to observe mentioned changes in security agenda. Can Turkey’s state-centric national security approach will be open up to individual and societal security aspect? In this sense, this study wants to highlight an opening period for civilization in security policies in Turkey.
