Abstract
True penetration into the image, comprehension of the image in all its multifacetedness and depth is possible only within the whole text. The system of images is directly related to the aesthetic-philosophical concept of the author and is the most personal component of the style, the individual manners of the writer. In the hard-boiled detective of Raymond Chandler, the way of character representation has its own scheme, namely: mosaic marking of characters, iconic marking of characters, photographic detailing of episodic personages, mediated personages’ characteristic, personages’ self-characteristic. Under the mosaic marking in the description of the character, we mean fragmentary submission in the space of the entire text characteristics and portrait of the character. In other words, the elements of mosaic marking, so to speak, are "scattered" in the text to "get together" in the full description after reading, and each fragment of the "mosaic", correlating with the events of the work, carries additional information about the character. Iconic markings of minor characters – this feature of the presentation of characters differs from the mosaic marking by the fact that the character's characteristic is presented not fragmentarily, but in a holistic way and allows the reader instantly get an impression of the character and fix it in memory. Under the photographic detailing, we mean a brief description of the character with an emphasis on certain details of his appearance and (or) behavior. In this way, the hard-boiled detective R. Chandler is portrayed mainly by episodic characters, and the technique of such a presentation of characters reminds the reader of the effect of a still-frame or photographic shooting. In the way of self-characterization of characters reveals, mainly, the image of the main character-detective. The mediated personages’ characteristic is based on the non-direct, but rather the indirect delivery of personages’ characteristics. That is, the character is illuminated through his actions and (or) because of the relation of other characters to him. Consequently, the translator in the work with hard-boiled detective text of Raymond Chandler must clearly reproduce all the invariant and variational features of the characterological context in accordance with the peculiarities of their idio-stylistic and author's presentation.
