Charity unions that provided aids to indigent pupils in the primary education in Ukraine (the end of 19th – beginning of 20th century)

Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the role of charity unions that provided aids to indigent pupils in the Ukraine in development of public philanthropic system. The main direction of activity and special feature of functioning of these organizations have been determined. It was established that members of local intelligentsia had taken part in this charity organizations` activity. Different forms of giving assistance to educational establishments like their foundation, necessary equipment supply, and poor pupils’ support are analyzed. Charitable assistance was an important factor of primary, secondary and higher education developing and functioning. The results of investigating the different forms of charitable assistance in the educational field of Ukraine at the end of 19th – the beginning of 20th century, convince in the necessity of considering the experience got at that time for the development of the modern charitable assistance activity Reasons of conversion from individual patronage to forming civilian and institutions of tutelage have been clarified here. The tendencies of development of charitable institutions in Ukraine have been designated here. Connection between changes in civilian-political life and activity of rendering the charitable assistance to educational institutions have been determined as well.
