CHOROIDAL MELANOMAS- OUR EXPERIENCE ON ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2019, Vol 6, Issue 13

Abstract

BACKGROUND Choroidal melanomas are the most common primary malignant lesion in adults. It is noted that metastasis is the most common malignant lesion of eye in adults, melanoma being second; however, patient rarely presents with metastasis in eye and scenario of diffuse metastatic disease, choroidal metastasis is rarely sought after. We wanted to study the initial presentation of choroidal melanoma of eye at our institute. We have had studied several features like age, sex, size, echogenicity, vascularity, extraocular extension, and distant metastasis of choroidal melanoma at out institute. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed our database of all patients presented with choroidal melanoma or diagnosed as choroidal melanoma, came to our institute from 2010 to 2015. The inclusion criteria for this study included all patients either presented as diagnosed case of choroidal melanoma or patient diagnosed as choroidal melanoma at our institute. All patients whose USG images were not available to us, were excluded from the study. Patients who had taken treatment of choroidal melanoma were excluded from study. RESULTS A study of 34 patients was done retrospectively. Maximum cases were found in 40-60 years age group with mild female predominance. On Ultrasonography (USG), most common feature was uniform hypoechoic mass lesion with internal vascularity. Most of choroidal melanoma measured between 10-20 mm. in size. Presence of extraocular extension of primary mass or metastasis on initial presentation is not seen in our study. CONCLUSION Ultrasonography is very useful diagnostic tool for diagnosis of choroidal melanoma. Choroidal melanoma of eyeball should be diagnosed with relatively small size of lesion with help of USG, improving the scope for survival and salvage of the eye.
