Classification of burial rituals of the cemeteries without burial mounds in regions of the Tsarevskoe ancient settlement

Abstract
Burial rituals of the Golden Horde cemeteries without mounds in the vicinity of the Tsarevskoe hill fort site are analyzed in the article. Materials from 256 burials have been studied. Their characteristic features make it possible to single out 8 basic types with variants. 51 burials (19.9% of the total number) in mausoleums or in crypts can be attributed as burials of the Golden Horde aristocracy. 56 burials (21.9 % of the total number) belong to the necropolis of the Old Russian settlement of the Vodyanskoe hill fort site. In the graves without burial mounds, western, south-western and north-western orientations are most widely spread (they comprise 94.9% of all burials). A comparison of the aristocratic (in mausoleums and crypts) burials without mounds in different regions of the Lower Volga makes it possible to conclude that their percentage rate was considerable higher in the vicinity of the Tsarevskoe hill fort site than in other regions. This allows supposing the greatest density of residence of the settled Golden Horde elite here. The smallest share of Muslim burials in coffins in the Lower Volga region (44.9%) and the maximum share of burials with grave goods (13.6%) are recorded in the vicinity of the Tsarevskoe hill fort site. The cemeteries without mounds in the vicinity of the Tsarevskoe hill fort site were situated not far from the settlements, the fact which attests to a link between the cemeteries of Golden Horde settled population with urban and rural monuments of the period under study.
