Clinical Characteristics, Diagnosis, Treatment Approaches of Patients with Acute Dyspnea in ENT Clinic
Journal Title: Journal of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine - Year 2019, Vol 72, Issue 1
Abstract
Objectives: In this study, we investigated the clinical features, examination and treatment approaches of patients with acute dyspnea who were hospitalized and treated at otorhinolaryngology department. Materials and Methods: The data of 66 (1.82%) patients with acute dyspnea were retrospectively studied between 2011 and 2017 at otorhinolaryngology department. Results: Vocal fold paralysis due to thyroid surgery is still the leading cause for majority of acute dyspnea patients presenting to otolaryngologydespite despite improved surgical techniques and neuromonitorisation. Infections and masses are other causes. Two patients (3.1%) were treated with medical treatment and observation and 64 patients (96.9%) were treated surgically. 11% of patients were treated with tracheotomy and direct laryngoscopy and/or bronchoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Seven patients (22.5%) were treated with tracheotomy, 24 patients (77.5%) were treated with posterior cordotomy and 1 patient (3.2%) was treated with posterior cordotomy and tracheotomy. Conclusions: It is important to follow the clinical situation in the diagnosis and treatment approach of the patients with acute dyspnea. These findings assess the options of treatment with least invasive methods of remission.

Conversion to Hip Arthroplasty After Cut-out Complication of Proximal Femoral Nailing (PFN) in Pertrochanteric Fractures
Objectives: A failed intertrochanteric fixation often leads to functional disability and pain. The most commonly observed complication is “cut-out”, which frequently requires hip arthroplasty in the subsequent period. In...
Investigation of The Relationship Between Congenital Hypothyroidism and Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Very Low Birth Weight Newborns
Objectives: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, which occurs due to surfactant deficiency in the lung. In the present study, we aimed to determine the risk factors for R...
Serum Procalcitonin as a Marker for Differential Diagnosis Between Bacterial Pneumonia and Scleroderma-related Lung Disease
Objectives: Scleroderma/Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by progressive fibrosis. SSc related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity among SSc patients. Procalcitonin (PC...
Repolarization Parameters in Patients with Premature Coronary Artery Disease
Objectives: Coronary artery disease (CAD) in young adults is relatively rare. Few data on CAD in young adults are available in the literature. In the current study, repolarization parameters were evaluated in patients wi...
Comparison of Local Activation Time and Index in Ablation of Premature Ventricular Complexes Originating From Right and Left Ventricular Outflow Tract
Objectives: We aim to investigate the local activation time (LAT) and local activation index as a new parameter in ablation of premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) arising from right and left ventricular outflow tract....
