Clinical characteristics of dermatomycoses and mycotic infections of skin appendages in the practice of a general physician – a still live issue

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 4

Abstract

Superficial mycoses, i.e. dermatomycosis, trichomycosis and onychomycosis, cause important epidemiologic, therapeutic and social problems. The incidence of superficial mycoses is continuously increasing. Increased incidence and prevalence of mycotic infections is not only caused by the growing population of individuals susceptible to mycoses inducted by a wider range of etiological factors, but also by advances in diagnostic methods. For clinical purposes, fungi have been divided into: dermatophytes, yeast-like fungi and moulds. This paper presents the classification of mycotic infections and their clinical pictures.
