Clinical profile of patients with inguinal hernias

Abstract
In the early part of the first century A.D., Celsus14, a famous Roman surgeon described the operation in vogue at the time in the Greek-Roman era. He gave an elaborate description of anatomy, pathology, and etiology of inguinal hernia. For an uncomplicated inguinal hernia he performed ligation and excision of unopened sac with orchidectomy. He described the signs and symptoms of obstructed and strangulated inguinal hernia and recommended the use of truss for an uncomplicated hernia. All cases of inguinal hernia with one of its complications attending all the surgical units of Medical College and Hospital were taken up for study. Those patients who were admitted to have an irreducible hernia initially but become reducible spontaneously without any intervention were excluded from the study. Most of the cases were obstructed inguinal hernia (45.24 %) without strangulation. In this study complicated inguinal hernia was associated with chronic cough in % of cases, chronic dysuria in % of cases and Chronic constipation in % of cases.
