Clinical Profile of Thyroid Carcinoma Cases Attending Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract
Background: Thyroid cancer constitutes about 1% of all malignant tumors and highly differentiated types account for 0.8% of all human malignancies. Thyroid cancer ranks among the 5 most frequent cancers in the 15 to 40 age group. For 5 year survivors, the relative survival for years 5-10 is in range of 99%. Methodology: The patients selected for this study were those who are admitted with clinically palpable thyroid swelling. Based on detailed history, thorough clinical examination and relevant investigations like FNAC, USG of thyroid and others, the diagnosis of carcinoma thyroid was made. Totally of 50 cases were selected for the study. Results: Majority of patients presented with enlargement of thyroid gland (42 cases 84%). Dysphagia was complained of in 12 patients (24%), Dyspnoea in 4 patients (8%), hoarseness of voice in 6 patients (12%), gland enlargement with cervical lymph node enlargement in 14 patients (28%). 8 patients (16%) presented with cervical lymphnode enlargement only. Conclusion: The incidence was higher than in the contemporary Indian literature.
