Clinicopathologic correlation of patients with lupus nephritis
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
Systemic Lupus erythromatosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder of unknown cause that can occur at almost any age, although it affects mostly women in second decade. The annual incidence of SLE is 50 to 70 per one million and its prevalence is about 500 per one million. Clinical or morphologic involvement of kidney in SLE occurs in 50% to 80% of patients at any moment during the course of their disease course of their disease. Lupus nephritis is a severe manifestation of the disease significantly influencing its prognosis. It accounts for 11% of secondary glomerulonephritis in India. The disease is characterised by an immune dysregulation leading to production of a variety of auto antibodies, prominent amongst which are the antinuclear antibodies, antibodies against cytoplasmic components, cell membrane determinants of red cells, white blood cells and platelets and the anti-phospholipid antibodies. The glomerular disease appears to result primarily from immune deposits of DNA antigens and auto antibodies. This study includes patients diagnosed with lupus nephritis over 13 yrs and 6 months in Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, their findings in renal biopsy, activity and chronicity scores and correlation with biochemical parameters.
