Clinicopathological study of solitary thyroid nodule

Abstract
Background: Nodular goiter is the most common lesion of the thyroid. The prevalence of these nodules in a given population depends on a number of factors such as age, sex, diet iodine deficiency and radiation exposure. Timely intervention in nodular lesions of thyroid can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. Aim and Objective: 1) To study the age, sex incidence and other clinical parameters of solitary thyroid nodules 2) To correlate between fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and histopathological examination of solitary nodule thyroid. Methodology: Total 60 patients presenting with solitary thyroid nodule were studied during study period. Data regarding age, sex, detailed history was collected with pretested questionnaire. Thorough clinical examination was carried out. The patients were investigated with diagnosis was made with FNAC and histopathology Results and Discussion: Majority of the patients were from the 31-40 years age group (40%).Male to female ratio was observed to be 1:7.6All patients complained of swelling in front of neck. FNAC showed 43 patients of colloid goitre comprising 71.67% followed by follicular neoplasm (18.33%). In diagnosing carcinoma sensitivity and specificity of FNAC was 90.9% and 100% respectively
