CO2 efflux, physical attribute and soil carbon in agro-ecological management systems
Journal Title: Revista Verde de Agroecologia e Desenvolvimento Sustentável - Year 2017, Vol 12, Issue 2
Abstract
Evaluation of soil in agroecological systems is of fundamental importance to check the influence of this type of soil management. The aim of this study is to evaluate the physical, CO2 efflux and the carbon in different management conditions. The survey area belongs to Alternative Technology Services Unit, located in Gloria do Goitá, Pernambuco, which develops techniques based on agro-ecological principles for sustainable development in the rural environment. Three areas were selected: Permaculture, Culture rotation and Forest in regeneration, for each of the areas disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from two layers 0-20 and 20-40 cm. The variables analyzed were: grain size, density, soil porosity, Total Carbon (TC) and Soil Organic Matter (SOM). It was also performed measuring the soil CO2 efflux, using a specific camera to soil coupled to Irga 6400XT. The results were analyzed by comparison of means using the Scott-Knot test at a probability of 5%. The permaculture and crop rotation had physical attributes values that approached the forest condition. With respect to C and MOS levels, the forest area had the highest averages, while for soil CO2 efflux, the areas managed obtained higher averages, demonstrating the benefits of these managements to improve soil quality.
