Cognitive organization of English Customs documents

Abstract

The article highlights cognitive organization of English Customs documents. The object of this research is the complex of English Customs documents (Customs Declaration, Cargo Declaration, Certificate of Origin, Phytosanitary Certificate, Certificate of Quality, Weight List, ATA Carnet, Invoice, Proforma-Invoice). English Customs documents were not the object of complex research in linguistics before now, and this caused the actuality of this paper. The subject of this study is cognitive parameters of English Customs documentation. The aim of this study was to reveal the specificity of propositional schemas of the frame "Transportation" which are used for arranging information in time of creating English Customs documents. It was pointed out that structuring information in time of forming English Customs documents carried out within the frame «Transportation» by using thing, identification, possession and action propositional schemas. These schemas are combined in different configurations depending on the compositional peculiarities of a certain kind of English Customs document. The schemas of the possession frame are used for arranging information in time of forming Customs Declarations and Cargo Declarations. Comparison schemas are not typical for this complex of texts at all. The main points and conclusions of this study can be a certain contribution to cognitive linguistics. The obtained results can be used for creating some educational and methodical manuals concerning the specifics of writing English Customs documents; in scientific work of students, masters and postgraduates. The possibilities of further scientific research of English Customs documentation complex are seen in the study of these documents in diachronic vision.
