Journal Title: The Advanced Science Journal - Year 2011, Vol 2011, Issue 1

Abstract

The article offers an overview of the Berlin dialect (Berlinisch) or Berlin Urban Vernacular (henceforth BUV) and its structure. We describe linguistic and extralinguistic factors, leading to linguistic change. In the focus of the research lies the structure of urban variety. We distinguish between two main communicative systems of the BUV, which are analyzed in obedience to sociolinguistic and communicative criteria. Thus, the BUV forms communication system and satisfies most communicative demands of its speakers. The speaker uses an appropriate language system, according to different communicative situations.
