Comparative study of stress distribution in Astra and Xive implant systems and in surrounding bone. A numerical analysis

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2015, Vol 65, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Localization and value of stress in implant and surrounding bone is influenced by the way the implant and abutment are connected. Initial (mounting) stress formed by the implant to abutment connection with a screw plays also an important role in the stress distribution. Initial stress may cumulate with stress released by implant loading during mastication and accelerate bone loss around implants.Aim of the study. To compare the distribution of both mounting stress and stress caused by external forces in abutment to implant and implant to bone interfaces.Methods. Numerical models and calculations were carried out using MSC MARC/Mentant system.Results. Stress resulting from mounting tension in bone surrounding Xive and Astra Tech implants were 13.5 MPa and 8.5 MPa, respectively. Bone stress resulting from external load was up to153% higher around Astra implants compared to Xive implants.Bone stress resulting from mounting tension and external load is more equally distributed around Xive implants. On the other hand, bone stress around Astra Tech implants was distributed on a larger area, however, its value was higher.Conclusions. 1. Numerical analysis revealed that bone stress around implants resulting from both mounting tension and external cross load are significantly lower around Xive implants compared to Astra Tech implants. 2. All Xive implant system elements (implant, screw, abutment) are more resistant to deformation resulting from external cross load.
