Composite Station Type and Line Layout Technology for Simultaneous Accommodation of Metro Trains and Trams

Journal Title: Urban Mass Transit - Year 2024, Vol 27, Issue 4

Abstract

Objective The interoperation between high-capacity rail transit and medium-low capacity systems is becoming increasingly necessary in connecting areas between the main urban center districts and sub-centers of some cities. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the composite station types and line layouts that can accommodate both metro trains and trams. Method Taking the B-type metro car without access to entry/exit lines and 100% low-floor tram as study case, the technical challenges of seamless integration between the two systems based on metro and tram interchange needs are analyzed. Four composite station type schemes in the form of turn-around are proposed : Scheme 1 (tram station front turn-back+metro train station front turn-back combination), Scheme 2 (tram station rear turn-back+metro train station front turn-back combination), Scheme 3 (tram station front turn-back+metro train station rear turn-back combination), and Scheme 4 (tram station rear turn-back+metro train station rear turn-back combination). On this basis, according to the layout requirements for island and side platforms, the classification of combinations in each scheme is further refined. Aspects including station layout types, auxiliary line settings, turn-back format, interchange distance for each combination mode are analyzed. Result & Conclusion The composite station types and line layouts provide reference for the integration of high-capacity rail transit systems with medium-low capacity rail transit systems. Specific technical solutions for passengers interchanging between the two rail transit systems on the same platform are offered, and line conditions for cross-line operation and shared resources between tram and metro are provided.
