Contact dermatitis to PPD in henna – an interesting presentation

Abstract
Henna or Mehandi is a dry powder derived from leaves and stems of henna plant (lowsonia intermis).1 It is used primarily as a red-brown hair dye but its use on skin and nails by females as a ritual at various religious and wedding functions particularly in Hindu and Islamic culture is also not uncommon. When it is left for hours, skin takes up the characteristics orange to brown colour of henna. In order to get the darker shades of henna and to get faster results, various substances are being added to henna particularly a dye paraphenylendiamine (PPD). The sensitivity to PPD is well documented
