CONTEMPORARY ART: APROBATION OF NEW HUMANISM
Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
This article centers on the problems of contemporary art in Ukraine and the world. The basis of the study takes into consideration one of its aspects – when the artist focuses on the social orientation of art. An example of an analysis of artistic actions is the attempt to identify new humanistic tendencies. It turns out that contemporary art does not cease to address the individual at a personal level. Its magnitude and radicalism are aimed at awakening the creative powers of the spectator, to spur a radical change in their thinking. Joseph Beuys work “7000 Oaks” (Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany in 1982) best describes the essence of his “social sculpture”, which restores confidence in the abilities of the individual, provided that he or she awakens a creative prin- ciple within his or herself. The “Wrapped Space” campaigns Christo and Jeanne-Claude (Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971–95) attract attention to objects of critical importance, and allow viewers to discover new qualities in the context of the present. Similarly, performances by Yves Klein “dematerialize” the human mind, freeing it from the domination of material meanings (“The Void”, 1958, “Cosmogonies”, 1960–62, “Silence is golden” 1960). The ability of the art to “circumvent” imposed framework is demonstrated by “Points of Unity” – a project by Dan- ish art duo Hesselholdt & Mejlvang produced by IZOLYATSIA. A simple combination of the colors of the Ukrainian flag – in which the clear border is blurred, signifying the possibility of a new color and a new solution – can be seen on 50 billboards in Kyiv. Thanks to the use of advertising, this project was able to not only engage in dialogue with the viewer, but also provided the viewer with an opportunity that is significant and uncommon in modern conditions – it invited the viewer to search for such “Points of Unity” in dialogue with another; in the space of his or her own city; in the end, in their own country which is currently experiencing an economic crisis and a war. Consequently, we cannot say that contemporary art necessarily facilitates a departure from humanistic values. In fact, it is obvious that another quality of new humanism has emerged, one which is manifested in the conscious refusal of a romantic “arrangement”. In simple forms that often have nothing to do with aesthetics, artists not only reveal the actual problems of time, but also reveal the opportunities of the person himself, the importance of his co-creation in society and the ability to withstand the systematic vision.
