CONTRABANDO, TRAGÉDIA E REFLEXIVIDADE: ANTÍGONA NA FRONTEIRA GAÚCHA
Journal Title: Ideação - Year 2013, Vol 15, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper brings together smuggling - described as a practice that oscilates between its meaning due to encroachment at local scale, present time and social and communitarian closeness and its meaning in general or distant views – and the Greek myth of Antigone as depicted in Sophocles tragedy. The approximation between Antigone and ant smugglers in Santana do Livramento-Rivera (Brazilian-Uruguayan border) has two dimensions. The first has to do with struggles over the body of someone dead while committing a felony against the state, both in the tragedy as in present-day boundaries, as discursive representation in causos, shortstories, novels or news, as well as in real life, when smugglers die fighting the police. The second dimension discusses performative, legal and reflexive aspects found in the performance of Greek tragedies (in its historical context) and in the relations between smugglers and customs personnel. Both dimensions have at its center the tension between family/local law and state law, which can be condensed as an opposition between legitimate and legal.
