Control of bacterial contamination in artificial sugarcane seed through early detection methods
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2001, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
The studies for stablishment of artificial seed technology in sugarcane (Saccharum spp hybrido) have not been free of damage produced by bacterial contaminations, principally in the stage before somatic embryos encapsulation. The aim of this paper was the control of bacterial contamination on in vitro plant lines, callus and cell suspensions (var Cuba 87-51) that will be used for obtained artificial seed is this crop. For these purpose two methods for early detection of bacterial contamination were used: transfer plant material onto bacteriological media and microscopic observation. These methods permitted bacterial contamination control before bacterial growth expressing on the media and guarantied that plant material utilized for sugarcane somatic embryos formed were free of detectable contaminants.
