Crude Leaf Extracts of Psidium Guajava Could Potentially be Used in Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes

Abstract
The antidiabetic potential of Psidium guajava ethanolic leaf extract was investigated in Wistar albino rats. Type 1 diabetes model was induced in the rats using Alloxan monohydrate (120 mg/kg) intraperitoneally. The extract was administered orally, daily for 21 days at 200, 400, 600 and 800mg/kg body weight in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 (n=5) respectively. Glibenclamide (50 mg/kg) was orally administered to group 5 as positive control while distilled water (1ml) was given to group 6 as negative control. Tail clipping was done at 7 day intervals and blood glucose levels determined. There was a time and dose dependent reduction in blood glucose levels of treated diabetic rats. The percent reduction in blood glucose level for the different treatment groups after 21 days was 57%, 64%, 65%, 78% and 84% for 200, 400, 600, 800mg/kg extracts and Glibenclamide respectively. At days 14 and 21 post-treatment there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the mean percent glucose reduction in rats treated with 600 mg/kg or 800 mg/kg of the extract and the group treated with glibenclamide indicating that the extract showed a high degree of antidiabetic activity. The high LD50 of the extract (9,922 mg/kg) in mice shows that the plant extract is non-toxic and safe to use since the value was found to be much higher than 5000 mg/kg as provided by OECD guideline 423.
