Cultural Image of Contemporary Ukraine in Diaspora Periodical Press of the USA (2012—2018)

Journal Title: Українознавство - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 69

Abstract

The article analyzes Ukrainian-language diaspora newspapers of the USA for revealing forms of cultural preservation experience and ways of representing Ukraine’s image through its cultural heritage. As a result of processing periodicals of the Ukrainian diaspora in the USA (Nova hazeta, Zakordonna Hazeta, Natsionalna Trybuna – Shliakh Peremohy, Mist, Svoboda, Ukrainske slovo), the following forms of promoting Ukrainian culture in the western world are found: music, cinema, theater, visual art. It is determined that the analyzed periodical publications of the diaspora fully illustrate the forms of cultural conservation experience and ways of representing Ukraine’s image through its cultural heritage, which constitutes a multilevel structure and is defined as a system model. It is noted that the size of the territory for conducting festivals, concerts, theatrical productions, exhibitions, etc., encompassing almost all states of America, is important for the dissemination of Ukrainian culture in the world and the improvement of the image of Ukraine. It has been established that the contributors to the electronic periodicals of the disapora try not to ignore, but, on the contrary, illustrate and describe every vivid phenomenon in the cultural life of the Ukrainian community, which gives hope and belief in the fact that Ukrainian culture and art, and therefore the image of Ukraine, can be brought to the highest level by promoting cultural achievements and heritage abroad. Thus, the main goal of cultural development pursued by the Ukrainian diaspora of the United States consists in the consolidation of Ukrainians all over the world for the revival and preservation of their national and cultural traditions.
