Cultural matrix: a key to understanding a text or modeling a redear’s perception in translation.

Abstract

A cultural matrix is a set of acquired judgements, value coding and semantic networks or maps inscribed in secondary texts on the basis of certain literary – and not only – primary works. Between the system of values at the level of the microsystem of terms which helps to interpret specific contexts, and the system of values at the level of discourse, there is a middle niche which contains a system of values at the level of the main idea of a writing which provides a specific text with its unique identity. From the viewpoint of translation, these contemplations stimulate the need to reformulate the definition of "equivalence" through the prism of culture and cultural studies. In religious discourse, equivalence is a balance between linguistic and terminological symbols and social and religious patterns of behaviour. The essence of the cultural dimension of equivalence can lie not only in the synchronic existence of adequate replacements, but also in its diachronic – cause-and-effect – development. While translating the term system associated with theanthropism, the cultural value codes which have been shaped in the target language-culture, are the point of reference in determining how successfully the translation can be received by the target reader. The case study of St. Petro Mohyla’s Catechism and its contemporary Ukrainian and English translations has revealed that in the religious discourse value codes are important because man-centred values contribute to the knowledge of God and God-centred values are to change the humankind. However, it is impossible to avoid historical and cultural collective memory in translation.
