CURRENT GEOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE ON SALT STRUCTURES FROM THE SZCZECIN REGION (NW POLAND) FOR PERSPECTIVE LOCATION OF CAVERN STORAGES AND DEPOSITORIES

Abstract
Government conception of diversity of gas and oil deliverers and accompanied decision of construction of the gas terminal at Świnoujście involved the urgent necessity to look for the new storage space, also in the salt rocks as the operating underground cavern storages. Hitherto discovered 14 salt diapirs and 10 pillows in the Szczecin Trough, composed of the Zechstein (Up.er Permian) salt deposits and in some of them the operating safety salt cavern storages for hydrocarbons could be constructed with underground leaching. Review of geological information on these structures, located and documented with geophysical and well data indicated that the best explored form is the Goleniów salt diapir. Other diapirs of this region: Międzyzdroje/Przytór, Wolin–Wicko–Wapnica, Wolin 2, Nowogard, Grzęzno and Oświno, as well as salt pillows: Stargard Szczeciński–Maszewo, Szczecin and Trzebież seem to be possible locations of such cavern storages or hazard waste depositories although their current geological recognition is generally insufficient and they require intensive complex studies before the decision on future management. Possible output of leaching brines directly to the Szczecin Embayment or to the Baltic Sea (now tested during leaching of the Kosakowo gas cavern storage) makes these salt structures very attractive.
