Cutaneous tuberculosis in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology in Bialystok – analysis of cases and the review of literature

Abstract
The aim of the study was the clinical and epidemiological analysis of cases of cutaneous tuberculosis diagnosed in the Department and of Dermatology and Venereology Medical University of Bialystok in 1994-2007 and the comparison with the data of literature. Material and methods: Nine cases of skin tuberculosis were diagnosed in the period analysed on the base of clinical and pathological features, and complementary diagnostic methods. The probable mode of cutaneous infection, clinical forms, diagnostic diffi culties, course and complications were discussed. Results: Seven cases of lupus vulgaris and two of scrofuloderma were diagnosed. The mean duration of skin lesions ranged from 3 months to 78 years. The mean age of patients on admission was 72.2 years. In one case the diagnosis was confi rmed by microbiological study results. None concomitant case of internal tuberculosis was found. The principal complications, described in 4 cases, were skin carcers, seen in active skin lesions and in scars. Conclusions: Skin tuberculosis is a rare condition in dermatological practice. Nevertheless, the knowledge of clinical picture, principles of diagnosis and treatment is necessary for dermatologists, in the context of frequent global migrations and pandemic of HIV and AIDS.
