CYTOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS OF PROLIFERATING PILOMATRICOMA MIMICKING MALIGNANCY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 35

Abstract

Proliferating pilomatricoma is a rare distinctive proliferative variant of pilomatricoma. It is a benign cystic neoplasm characterized histopathologically by matrical differentiation. Till date very few cases of proliferating pilomatricoma have been reported in literature, most of them have presentation in elderly. We report a case of an 18-year-old woman presented with a 3- month history of a painless hard mass on the lateral aspect of right arm and no history of trauma to the site. FNAC smear showed singly-lying as well as clusters of round to oval cells with scant to moderate amount of pale blue cytoplasm, vesicular nuclei with occasional cell showing prominent nucleolus. Moderate pleomorphism, mitosis along with ghost cells, few multinucleated giant cells is also evident. A cytological impression of? pilomatricoma was rendered with a suspicion of malignancy which was confirmed on histopathology as proliferating pilomatricoma. Awareness of this rare entity and knowledge of distinct cytological and histomorphology will help in properly diagnosing this lesion.
