Cytomorphological study of lymph node lesions at tertiary care centre
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: The degree and pattern of morphological changes in lymphadenopathy are dependent on the inciting stimulus and the intensity of the response. FNAC of lymph node has become an integral part of the initial diagnosis and management of patients with lymphadenopathy. Aim: To evaluate the cytomorphological findings in FNAC of various lymph node lesions. Material and Methods: A total 203 patients who presented with lymphadenopathy patients were included. The site and size of palpable lymph node was noted and aspiration of lymph node done and were stained with PAP stain.Ziehl-Neelson (ZN) staining was done whenever a cytological diagnosis of granulomatous lesion was made. Results: Out of 203 cases, the most common lymph node lesions were reactive lymphadenitis [68 cases (33.5%)] followed by Tuberculous lymphadenitis [57 cases (28.1%)], Metastatic carcinoma [30 cases (14.8%)], Suppurative lymphadenitis [21 cases(10.3%)], Granulomatous lymphadenitis [16 cases(7.9%)], Lymphoproliferative disorder [6 cases(3.0%)] and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma [5 cases(2.5%)]. Conclusion: Using cytomorphology alone it is often possible to decide the cause of lymphadenopathy. Thus, patients with reactive lymph node enlargement or metastasis from a known primary can be spared of unnecessary excision or incision biopsy of lymph nodes.
