Czy ASF jeździ koleją? I o tym, jak temu zapobiec

Journal Title: Technika Transportu Szynowego - Year 2018, Vol 294, Issue 11

Abstract

A few years ago, the virus of African swine fever came to Poland from across the eastern border. The disease is lethal to animals and highly contagious, and its appearance leads to the necessity of liquidation of the entire herd. The vector for the virus is primarily wild boar. Naturally, the disease travels up to several dozen kilometres a year, but it is possible to transport it quickly over long distances on vehicles. Railway procedures do not require disinfection of the train immediately after each collision with an animal, so when an infected boar falls under the train, its debris on the chassis can even reach the other end of the country to trigger new outbreaks of the disease. Thus, it is necessary to do everything possible to prevent such situations. On Polish railway lines, special animal protection devices have been used for over 10 years to warn animals against trains and effectively prevent collisions. However, they protect only a small part of areas, where railway lines intersect with animal migration routes. Prevention of ASF is a race against time – will we be able to implement the appropriate measures before it is too late?
