Czy Bolesław Prus był ekonomicznym fantastą? Kariera finansowa Stanisława Wokulskiego w kontekście dziewiętnastowiecznych realiów ekonomicznych
Journal Title: Wiek XIX. Rocznik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. Adama Mickiewicza - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue
Abstract
Was Bolesław Prus an Economic Fantast? Stanisław Wokulski’s Financial Success in the Context of the Nineteenth-Century Economic Reality The article discusses the problem of the economic context in the novel The Doll (Lalka). It presents successive stages of the financial career of the main character, including the economic context of the period as well as the actual spectacular financial successes in those days. It appears that Bolesław Prus intentionally and deliberately exaggerated Stanisław Wokulski’s fortune, as well as its considerable increase, intending to achieve the result comparable to the success of the fabulous Cinderella. The chief obstacle for the novel’s main characters in building their relationship are class differences, while economic issues are meant to strengthen the very message of the novel. The presented problem is analysed in the context of some previous works by other authors examining economic questions in the most interesting novel by Prus with respect to its artistic and ideological aspects.
