Dental stem cells and regeneration of tooth structures– review of literature

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 11

Abstract

Introduction: Stem cells and their possible application in medical treatment is a subject of intensive research. These cells are characterised by their ability to self-renew and differentiate into cells of the tissue of origin. The presence of stem cells in adult organisms (the so-called somatic stem cells) enables tissue regeneration. Stem cells are also present in dental tissues. Experiments to determine the properties of dental stem cells and potential therapeutic applications are carried out.Aim of the study: To present up to date information on heretofore identifieddentalstemcells, andabouttheir potential applications in dental and periodontal tissue regeneration. Conclusions: So far, several kinds of dental stem cells have been identifiedindentaltissueandperiodontal ligaments. It has been found that they can differentiate to odontoblasts, osteoblasts, and neuron-like cells. These dental stem cells can be used to regenerate dentine, pulp, or periodontal ligament. They can also be used to form an experimental biotooth. No adult stem cell that would be able to regenerate enamel has yet been identified.
