DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTIONAL AND TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS EMPLOYED IN LOGISTIC SUBSYSTEM OF SUPPLYING ARMED FORCES OF GREAT BRITAIN, USA, FRANCE AND GERMANY – PART I

Journal Title: Scientific Journal of the Military University of Land Forces - Year 2010, Vol 156, Issue 2

Abstract

The fundamental purpose of the logistic supply subsystem is to provide solutions for the physical transfer of goods and specialist services necessary for the execution of operational and tactical tasks. Present conditions for conducting allied and international military missions as well as peacekeeping and stabilisation operations, being most often of expeditionary nature, make it imperative to seek new functional, technical and stand-ardisation solutions in order to optimise the efficiency of national supply subsystems. Technical and standardisation optimisation as well as functional one, which is its consequence, of national supply subsystems are subordinated to the idea of compatibility at the execution level enabling one to optionally carry out supply tasks in the allied operating space. This is the direction that supply systems of numerous NATO Member States are taking. However, the most has been achieved in this area by the militaries of Great Britain, the United States, France and Germany. These countries have developed state-of-the-art functional and technical solutions for handling supply streams within supply subsystems called: DROPS (Demountable Rack Offload & Pickup System) – Great Britain; FASTARM (Fast Arming) and MOADS/PLS (Maneuver-Oriented Ammunition Distribution System/Palletized Loading System) – the USA; VTL (Vehicule de Logistique Transport) – France, and MULTI (Mechanisierte Umschlag- Lagerung- Integration Transport) – Germany. The first part of the article presents the characteristics of DROPS and MOADS/PLS systems. The second part of the article includes a description of VTL and MULTI systems as well as the summary.
